March 2011

We had the gift of beautiful weather for our March event. A group of us traveled to Philadelphia to work with an organization called Neighbors In Action. We met up with the organizers at an intersection near an elementary school.  We were given gloves and tools and encouraged to work in groups of three, sweeping, shoveling and bagging trash.  Along with more than 20 other volunteers from around the city we spread out and began to clean, clean, clean.

Our main focus was the playground of the elementary school.  It was mostly fenced in and completely covered in asphalt so the leaves from the trees and the trash from the community had nowhere to go.  We raked and swept and shoveled more bags of trash than we could count.  As we worked, children from the neighborhood asked if they could help.  Side-by-side we cleaned with children as young as five until all the trash was picked up.

After the playground was clean we continued on down the street picking up trash.  Some of us were surprised to find so little trash from alcohol, cigarettes or drug paraphernalia.  Almost everything we found was from junk food.  Candy wrappers, chip bags, soda bottles, juice boxes, snack cake containers and plastic grocery bags.

All down the street neighbors smiled and thanked us.  Everyone seemed genuinely glad to have us there. Here's a picture of the ASC group.

Once we got to the end of our project it was awesome to walk back to our cars and see the noticeable difference in the clean street. Ray, the guy in charge, thanked everyone and sent us on our way.

After our service project we went to Tony Jr's for cheese steaks!  They were fabulous.  A true Philly adventure.

Most of the group had to head back to MD after lunch but the rest of us headed over to the historic district to see the sights.

Ben Franklin's grave.

The Liberty Bell (this was on the way up to the building).

Independence Hall

And last, but not least, the Philadelphia Museum of Art where the kids ran the steps just like Rocky.
All-in-all a great day of serving and fun. See you next month!

February 2011

We switched things up this month and had our adventure before serving.  A group of us met at the Value Village thrift store in Laurel.  We paired up and each person had to buy an outfit for their partner.  Once we were all clothed in ridiculous outfits we went to Monster Mini Golf in Elkridge!

Monster Golf was a blast!  Kind of like Rock-n-bowl meets put-put.

After mini-golf we headed over to Bethany United Methodist Church to volunteer at the Grassroots Cold Weather Shelter.  As soon as we arrived some of the guys went over to the mall to pick up the guests while the rest of us got busy in the kitchen.

The kids were eager to help make dessert and set out water pitchers on the table.

The rest of us finished dessert, pulled pork and set up the food to dish out.

One of the unique things about the Cold Weather Shelter is that the location changes from week to week.  Because each church only gets one week to host, the volunteer line-up is impressive.  Everyone brings out their best for the guests.  The man in charge of food on the night we volunteered told us he woke up at 5:00 that morning to start cooking the pork.  It was restaurant quality.  He also made his BBQ sauce from scratch.

Out of respect we didn't take pictures of the guests.  Once they arrived we served them dinner and then made our own plates and sat down to eat.  They were really surprised and pleased that we ate with them and listened to their stories.  Each one of us was touched by what they had to say and many in our group expressed that this was, by far, the best and most meaningful of our service trips.

Thanks to everyone who came out in February!  See you again in March.

January 2011

We began our January 2011 event in Baltimore City at the Baltimore Free Store.
The Baltimore Free Store collects unwanted goods and redistributes them to people who want them. They are simply trying to change the way people view their relationship to their goods, their community and their earth. Though they target low-income neighborhoods to distribute goods, there are no requirements for shoppers; the Free Store is open to anyone who wishes to come.

Their motto: give what you can, take what you need.

Their Mission: Promoting recycling and reuse to help alleviate the traumas of poverty and to involved communities in working together to meet their needs.
The Baltimore Free Store is in the process of changing locations because their lease is up at the end of January.  They needed help clearing out the store and we were on the job!

Adventure Service Club brought 15 volunteers to assist the Baltimore Free Store volunteers in their task.

We emptied out the basement...

...carried lots and lots of stuff...

...sorted loads of bins...

...stacked and moved out more bins than we could count...

...got the kids involved...

...cleaned out the office...

...set things out on the sidewalk for people to take...

...packed a trailer...

...and got really dirty!

A couple of days later Bonnie, our host at the Free Store, sent this email:
I wanted to let you know first how glad I am that you guys came and helped a few weeks ago.  As it turned out, we were really short on volunteers that day.  If you guys hadn't been there, I really don't think we would have been able to move out on time (or at least we would have been working into the wee hours to make it happen!).  My fellow BFS volunteers were pleasantly surprised and very impressed with the positive, hard-working group you guys are.  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Then we went to Joe Squared for lunch. It was very tasty.

Last but not least a bunch of us went to Ski Liberty for some snow tubing fun.

Everybody had a blast!

Snow tube races are the best.

The contest this month was to see who could go down the hill the most times.  Michael won with 27 times in two hours.  Way to go Michael!

Looking forward to seeing you all in February for some MiniGolf fun and volunteering at the Howard County Cold Weather Shelter.  Click here for more information and to register.
